Your Job Search Survival Kit: Don’t Leave Home Without It

]]>

Picture this: you’re in the grocery store, stuck in line behind a gentleman paying for 0 worth of groceries in all pennies. You strike up a conversation with the woman behind you, find out she’s the hiring manager at the company of your dreams, and guess what: she wants to bring you in for an interview. But of course you’re caught red-handed without your business cards, and by the time you get home, you’ve lost the crinkled receipt you wrote her number on the back of.

Sound at all familiar? It seems like whenever you’re on the job hunt, opportunities spring when you least expect it. Next time, don’t be caught unprepared. Create a job survival kit you can take with you anywhere and everywhere so you’ll always have the materials you need to help move your job search forward.

What You Need
The survival kit I keep in my car is perfect for any kind of highway emergency: flashlight, jumper cables, tire jack, work gloves, and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. Your job search survival kit should be similar: it should contain every item you’d need for a variety of spontaneous networking situations. These basics are a great place to start:

Copies of Your Resume
Most job seekers email their resumes these days, so it’s easy to forget all about print copies. But having a hard copy to hand out will help you stand out from other candidates and get your name in front of the hiring manager.

Once you update your resume, print out hard copies to hand out to recruiters, fellow alumni, future employers—anyone you meet who can help in your job search. One word of advice: don’t use copy paper. Good letterhead costs a little extra, but its texture and weight will help your resume stand out from those printed on the office laser printer. Also, if you don’t have one already, purchase a plastic file folder or notebook to keep your resumes in. There’s nothing more disheartening than a resume with wrinkly corners.
Business Cards
Always have business on hand. Even if you’ve been out of work for awhile, make some personal cards that contain your contact info, website, Twitter handle, etc. You can get a box of cards printed up fairly cheaply at Kinko’s or one of your neighborhood printers, and Microsoft Word offers a variety easy-to-follow business card templates.

One thing to note: if you’re making your own business cards, make sure the fonts, colors, and formatting mimick your resume. If your business cards and resume match, it makes your personal brand look that much more professional.
Sample Materials
Depending on your industry and if its feasible, try to keep a few works samples in the same folder as your resume. If you’re a freelance writer, keep copies of articles and other writing samples you can hand out along with your resumes. If you’re in the non-profit sector, hang on to annual reports that demonstrate your contributions to past employers. If you’re a graphic designer, keep copies of your favorite design pieces and clip them to your resume.

Where You Should Keep It

In an ideal world, you have your job search materials with you at all times. But it seems like the times you most need your resume is when you’re at the park with your kids, and your briefcase is nowhere to be found. Here’s where you can stash your job search survival kits so you’re prepared for any opportunities that come your way.

In Your Car
Sometimes you’re headed places—softball practice, yoga, the zoo—where it’s just not practical to lug your briefcase. But chances are you got there in your care, which can double as a very expensive, four-wheeled purse. Stash copies of our resume somewhere they can’t get wet or wrinkled; possibly in your glove compartment (if it’s large enough) or in the pockets attached to the back of the driver’s seat.
In Your Gym Locker
The gym is a surprisingly great place to network. And while you can’t carry your business cards with you on the stairclimber (where they’d probably get pretty sweaty), you can keep your materials stashed in your gym locker to hand out to any potential employers, colleagues or clients you meet.
In Your Pocket
When you can’t take everything with you, your business card can suffice. Many office supply companies make leather or plastic business card holders that will keep your cards fresh-looking, but that are also light and easy to carry. Slip one of these in your pocket whenever you leave the house, and you’ll be ready for any job opportunities that come your way.

A ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. In today economic state and with companies going under and governments all around the world failing. It might be a good Idea to prepare yourself a well built survival kit.

There are many things that to into a good survival kit. Some of the obvious things are none perishable foods, bottled water For the reason of you will want to be able to eat and drink if things get to the point that food is hard to come by. Other things that you might want to include are toothpaste and Bruch along with other hygiene related objects. You might even want to throw things like toilet paper in there as well.. A first aid kit, and tools. It would be a good idea to have a small tool set with your survival kit. A flash light and lots of batteries. It also would be good to have candles as another sources of light. A small radio, and a few warm blankets.

Those are things that most people would think of when making a survival kit. Here are some things that a lot of people would not think about but can be just is important. For starters some sort of hard currency. Gold or silver, if the country you are in economy is failing the paper money that it makes is going to be worthless. But gold and silver will always be worth something. You should also have a few good knives in you kit as well. Knives are a great tool. They can be used for many things. Most importantly they can be used to defended all of the things that I have mentioned above. In hard times if you have something that others want people will try to take it. If it is up to there children starving or yours, they will let yours go hungry. That is why I would recommend having a few good quality knives in your kit, and if you can afford to gave a gun and ammunition in your kit I would recommend that as well. I have opened a online store called

pocketknivesdepot.com to try to make good quality knives affordable.

How and What to Prepare in a DIY Flood-Survival Kit

Very few natural calamities can bring more desolation and waste than floods, which have the capability of cutting off your food and water supply, and deprive you of shelter and electricity. Floods occur in many areas of the country and if you live in a flood-prone area, you have to protect your household by preparing a well-supplied flood survival kit. Food and water supply A supply of clean potable water is one of the vital things to have on hand. The average person consumes about four gallons of water each day and so you should lay aside a two-day water supply for every member of your household. Store your clean water in containers purchased in stores or in milk jugs. Use plastic containers with tight screw-on caps. Pop-top caps come loose and can be easily contaminated. You will also need an abundant supply of food which include various canned and dry goods. However, don’t make your kit too backbreaking to carry. Don’t forget to pack a lot of cereals as they are light and provide much-needed energy. Pack some candies and chocolate bars as additional energy sources. Remember to bring a can opener. Stack up on food items that don’t spoil for a while and are packed in vacuum or air tight containers. Forget about foods that spoil overnight as you have to discard them the following day. Other important components Keep a portable battery-operated radio or mini-TV in your kit, and bring along lots of fresh replacement batteries. They will come in handy to be informed of the latest news and updates. Include a flashlight, also with extra fresh batteries and a spare bulb. Be ready also with candles and waterproof matches. You probably have a first-aid kit in your home but it is very important to have a well-stocked version included in your flood survival kit. Your first-aid kit should include antipyretics, cough and cold medication, antiseptic solution, water-purifying pills, bandages, anti-diarrheal medication, and antibiotic capsules. The kit should contain daily supplies of disposable plates, napkins, cups, utensils and aluminum foil. Bear in mind that garbage collection may not be readily available during times of emergency. There may not be clean water supply to bathe in or wash dishes with. Make your flood survival kit portable and easy to carry. Store it in a watertight container that can be transported easily or you can pack it in several containers which can be carried by adult members of the household. This way, carrying the kit will not be saddled to just one person. Bring special medications and hygiene products Your kit will not be complete without sanitary hygiene products such as soaps, toilet tissues, toothpaste, deodorant, and feminine napkins. Since sewage problems might arise, waste should be disposed in trash bags inside plastic containers with airtight covers. At this point, be careful how you dispose your waste to avoid outbreaks of infectious diseases. Take into consideration diapers and milk formulas if there is an infant in the family. Also be prepared with medication and special diets for person suffering from diabetes, heart disease, and such. The needs of the aged should also be attended to. Don’t forget to pack dry warm clothing and rain gears in your flood survival kit.

Survival kits are recommended for everyone heading into the wilderness

]]>

Exploring the wilderness is an exciting experience, but what would you do if you suddenly found yourself lost? Most explorers don’t think it can happen to them, but in the blink of an eye it can, even if you are experienced or have been in the area before.

Survival kits are recommended for everyone heading into the wilderness, regardless of where you are going, or how experienced you are with exploration. First, consider the area you are planning to explore and how you will carry the survival kit. If you are able to carry it in a vehicle, then you can have more items than if you are going to have to carry everything on you. Prepare for the conditions of the area. For example you will pack a different survival kit for a swampy area that for a dry desert area.

Being prepared will make all the difference in the outcome for you and those traveling with you. Planning ahead will help ensure the safety of everyone. Do not venture out into the wilderness if you are not physically fit enough to do so. You don’t want the risk of potential major medical issues to deal with in this type of situation. Make sure everyone has up to date immunizations as well.

Try to select items for your kit that can be used for more than one purpose. This will cut down on the number of items you need as well as the weight of the kit. For example, a multi purpose knife can be used in place of packing individual items.

Essential items to carry every time you head in the wilderness include first aid items, water purification tablets, items to start a fire, signaling items such as flares, food, items to prepare food, and shelter, or items to prepare a shelter. It is a good idea to also pack sunscreen, bug repellent,  and Chap Stick to help you feel better throughout the day.

The Survival Skills You Need Depend On The Elements Of The Area You Will Be In

The survival skills you need depend on the elements of the area you will be in. Desert survival training includes learning about the terrain, the environment, the need for water, heat complications, and desert hazards. Surviving In The Wilderness Can Be A Life Changing Experience

If no surface water is found, dig a hole in damp soil. The water will settle and become clear. You can filter the water as much as possible. Start by punching small holes in the bottom of a container. As you pour the collected water in it, the large pieces of particles will stay in the container. While drinking such water is not recommended, it may be your only water source available.

Being Lost In The Wilderness Can Be A Person’S Worst Fear

If you find you are lost, size up the area around you. Use your common sense to mark your barrings. Listen to the sounds out there to try to determine the type of surroundings you are in. Always stay on marked trails. While it is appealing to go into territory that is untravelled, there is a reason such trails are marketed.
